A photographic journey through COVID-19, a testimony to life during self and social isolation

Pakistan’s leading independent publishing house Markings Publishing, helmed by Kiran Aman, has further extended its global footprint with thousands of entries from over 25 COVID-19 affected countries for “OUR MARKINGS 2020” in week 2. A photographic journey through COVID-19, a testimony to life during self and social isolation, “OUR MARKINGS 2020” is the first global outreach project by Markings Publishing.

In its second week, the Markings team has received photographic entries from Pakistan, as well as from other countries and people of different nationalities around the world. Some of these countries include Jordan, Argentina, Austria, Germany, England, Greece, Australia, Ireland, Tanzania, Indonesia, Spain, Norway, Japan, Italy, France, Macau, Turkey, USA, Saudi Arabia, Dubai, Qatar, India, Malaysia, and Canada to name a few.

The entries range from photographs that depict the daily musings of those in isolation. Some entries are thought provoking, others heartwarming, and some a reminder of the seriousness of COVID-19.

There are three photographs that are evident of the onerous times the world is currently facing. One is from a patient who has tested positive for Coronavirus in Jordan and despite her illness she speaks of her belief for a better future, another from a caretaker at an old people’s home who shares how she will be distributing Easter goodies to keep spirits alive, and an entry from Austria depicting how simply playing live music on one’s balcony can impart optimism.

The project continues to receive photo entries and support from local celebrities. Some entries include those from actress Sarwat Gailani, actor Ali Kazmi, photographer Arif Mahmood, director/producer Mehreen Jabbar, fashion designer Mahgul, filmmaker Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, Tina Sami, Faisal Kapadia of Strings, actress Mahira Khan, media personality Anoushey Ashraf, photographer Amean J, and journalist Sonya Rehman.

Indeed, in these unprecedented times amid COVID-19, Kiran aims to unite the community to find communal strength and perseverance by joining hands on one platform to document the shifting values in the current times.

“As the project continues to grow, with more reach around the world, Markings is grateful to be able to document such an important time in the lives of the entire global community.” said CEO Markings, Kiran Aman.

Launched on 27th March 2020, Markings Publishing is inviting everyone to send in photographs that depict what one feels, sees, or thinks, to initiate the live case history for “OUR MARKINGS 2020”. These submissions will be compiled in a book, which will document the journey through this time.

The Markings team is shortlisting the most powerful entries which will be published in “OUR MARKINGS 2020”, whilst the remaining images being shared across social media, crediting the respective photographer(s).
